Cayman Islands
Discovered by accident by Columbus in 1503, the Cayman Islands have a history of pirates and seafaring misadventures--the most famous of which is the Wreck of Ten Sails. A British colony since 1863, the islands now thrive on the tourism and banking industries.
Beachgoers will fall in love with the beaches of the Cayman Islands. Grand Cayman is home to the famous Seven Mile Beach (it's really only 5 1/2 miles long), with its soft, powdery sands, while Cayman Brac and Little Cayman boast plenty of secluded sandy stretches and coves.
For those who wish to do more than laze on the beach, the Cayman Islands offer a variety of water sports--diving and snorkeling being the top choices. And landlubbers needn't worry: There are excellent golf and tennis facilities available at larger resorts and communities.
For nighttime entertainment, several clubs and hotels feature live local bands and recorded music for dancing. You'll find bars that are great for people watching, as well as a comedy club.
History buffs will enjoy the sites of George Town--Grand Cayman's capital and largest town. Nature lovers, on the other hand, can revel in the Caymans' lush landscapes and numerous bird-watching opportunities.
