The city contains small artificial islands connected by canals, sometimes called the Pacific's Venice. Some scholars have interpreted nan Madol as the remains of one of the "lost continents" of Lemuria or Mu.

The ancient city was a special place of residence for the Pohnpei nobility and where priests conducted mortuary activities.
